April 17, 1982

Queen Elizabeth II and Prime Minister Pierre Elliott Trudeau sign the Proclamation of the Constitution Act in a ceremony on Parliament Hill in Ottawa. Canada gains full political independence from the United Kingdom with the new constitution. It is accompanied by the new Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, which guarantees the fundamental rights and freedoms of all Canadians.
